The American Red Cross online Museum has an interesting collection of patterns from the World War II era patterns designed for servicemen.

In the same vein the V&A has some patterns from “Essentials for the Forces”, for British service men and women in WWII.

It’s an interesting read and the author, Kristen Rengren, has a cute vintage shrug pattern on her web site.
