Knit Your Bit
The American Red Cross online Museum has an interesting collection of patterns from the World War II era patterns designed for servicemen.

In the same vein the V&A has some patterns from “Essentials for the Forces”, for British service men and women in WWII.
My 1941 “Lux Book” magazine contains an entire supplement of patterns suitable for knitting for those at war titled: “Is your man one of the lucky ones?” (nice dose of guilt for those who hadn’t sent off piles of knitted goods). The 1942 edition has a few service patterns in it, but no special supplement that year which is unsurprising given there is a limit to the number of patterns suitable for knitting people with pretty strict uniform requirements. That said, the range of mittens and gloves designed for specific roles in the services is quite impressive. Maud Churchill Nicoll’s “Knitting and Sewing, How to Make Seventy Useful Articles for Men in the Army and Navy” (get a copy from the Antique Pattern Library) contains a rather staggaring array of things to wear on your hands like rifle and heavy steering mittens.
