Marguerite
I’ve started the Marguerite Baby Cardigan.

The pattern calls for 3ply but I’m using Patons Big Baby 4ply (colour 3911) on 3.25mm needles and I’m matching the tension called for.

The pattern claims that 2oz (about 60g) is all you need but that’s laughable (vintage patterns lie). I’ve got two balls of Big Baby, one is for security (these are 100g balls so that’s probably quite a lot of security) and I’ll let you know how much I get through. I don’t normally knit with “plastic” yarns (Big Baby is 50/50 acrylic and nylon) but I’m actually very impressed with this one, it handles nicely.
The stitch pattern is straight-forward; more interesting than garter or stocking stitch but not so complex that you can’t knit it while watching telly or having a conversation. It’s just 2×2 rib for three rows with a simple twist on the fourth.

I like that it’s knitted in one piece to the armholes - less seaming to do later and hopefully more comfortable for baby. It also means less pieces to complete which can be a good thing if you are like me and find the second (cardigan front, sleeve, sock…) of anything less interesting than the first.

It’s so true that vintage patterns lie. I love to make the baby ones up for charity knitting and always buy plenty of extra wool. Any left over can always make a matching hat!
I’ve noticed that the old patterns are much less likely to have seams, which can chafe. Something modern pattern designers seem to have forgotten!
