Golf Hose Pattern Problems
It seems the Golf Hose in Cable Stitch instructions are not sound. I would really have liked to test this pattern before posting about its problems but I just don’t have the time so I’ll let you know what I have deduced and if you can help by sharing your advice then hopefully when can come up with a sensible rewrite for the pattern.
Having read it over and over I think the pattern has an error here: “After the 18th cable is worked decrease…”. This seems far too late in the pattern to start decreasing. And when you then read “having reached the 13th cable” and “continue now until there are 19 cables” it suggests that “After the 18th cable is worked decrease…” should actually read: “After the 6th cable is worked decrease…” Edit: “After the 8th cable is worked decrease…” (thanks Lucy).
So:
There are 10 rounds to the stitch pattern. You decrease initially on 7th round after the 6th cable you work. The cable comes on round 10 of the stitch pattern.
- Work to the 6th Edit: 8th cable round.
- Work rounds 1 - 6 of the stitch pattern normally, then on the 7th round of the stitch pattern you decrease as described.
- On the 7th round of the following 6 repeats of the stitch pattern you also decrease. In total you will have decreased 14 stitches (dropping your total stitch count to 76 stitches).
Does this sound more sensible?
Has anyone worked on this pattern far enough to confirm that they threw their knitting at a wall in frustration having struck problems?
The pattern isn’t written well initially, it’s certainly not as clear as we are used to today, but it harks from the 1930s and well things were different then. It’s a smart sock though and I’m sure we can nut it out - knitters are a smart lot.

the corrected pattern should read “after the 8th cable is worked, decrease…” Because the cable pattern is worked over 10 rows, the next 7 decreases which take place every 7 rows will cover 49 rows and take you to the 13th cable - which is 50 rows after the 8th cable

Well done. “8th” as a correction for “18th” makes much more sense too. Many thanks!
