Model T Ford

I’m really very, very fond of my DH, but he doesn’t provide many fulfilling knitting opportunities. A few years back I knitted him a version of this:

Cable Sweater, 1949.

That original is from 1949, there is a copy of the pattern in Knitting in Vogue, Number 3 by Christina Probert (ISBN 0 333 40080 1).

I like it, I enjoyed knitting it, I think it looks great on him. He barely wears it. Not because he doesn’t like it (so he says) but because it’s “too warm”.

For work, DH wears lightweight, commercial knits. They shrink and they wear thin very quickly. So, methought I’d knit him a superior lightweight jersey. First I needed to ask some questions:

Q: What colour?
A: Gray or black.
Let me be clear, when he says “gray” he means “dark, charcoal gray, almost black really”.So my colour choice was really just black.

Q: Any patterning?
A: No, just plain.

Q: What all of it? Can I do little details?
A: If I can’t tell there are “details” then that’s fine.

So, I have before me the prospect of a plain (stocking stitch), black jumper in 3ply. No rib (I managed to sneak a little tweed stitch in for the hem), raglan sleeves (I’m still thinking about what sort of “detail” I can smuggle in there) and a round neck. Yawn!

All I can say is thank goodness he’s only a 38″ chest.

Still, it’s great “no brainer” knitting. I’ve knit through two quizzes (maybe it’s a lucky quiz project: we placed first and then second), while reading the news and blogs, and so forth. I can pick it up and put it down any time without worrying about where I am. I never have to count anything, I just knit. But you know, sometimes a girls needs more.

Model T ford jersey, body.

Oh, and those are Knit Picks needles, I like.

Ah….yes. Mine helped pick out Christmas sock yarn for my cousin and uncle. Brown tweed–pretty fetching, wouldn’t you say? And so far out of the man comfort zone of black, or black.

So, my “detailing” is subtly-off ribs, which I actually think are pretty sexy in the brown tweed, on his feet. But no sweaters for my hubby…he’s allergic to yarn. Mmnhmn…yarn.

Am I detecting a distinct lack of give-a-damn? Sounds like you need a night in front of a Christmas tree with a good glass of …. Sprite, only two cats, and a knitting friend who will bug you until you finish it, damn it! That way I can perve while I’m resigned to my current non-knitting status. :)
